Triumph Revamps the Rocket III for 2019
Triumph Revamps the Rocket III for 2019 Triumph Motorcycles appears to be developing and delivering an all-new Rocket III beast in 2019, lining up Ducati’s new Diavel in it’s crosshairs. An official design sketch was revealed at the annual Triumph dealers conference back in the fall, with a brief glimpse of a “test mule” ridden across the stage to corroborate the artwork mock-up. That was it- no further info was offered at the time. Now some spec details are emerging, and the upgraded bike looks to be a muscular marvel indeed. Triumph asserts the new Rocket III will make in…

Last Ride of Rolling Thunder

Last Ride of Rolling Thunder
Last Ride of Rolling Thunder Washington, DC - After 32 years of riding to our nation’s capital in support of America’s military, veterans, POWs and MIAs, the annual Rolling Thunder “Ride For Freedom” will be permanently parked after the May 2019 event. Citing increased conflicts with Pentagon parking officials and annual rising costs to put on the weekend of events, RT leaders decided to “hit the brakes” following this next upcoming ride. Gus Dante, Rolling Thunder board member, spoke to local news network WTOP in Washington stating, “We had so many problems in the last two or three years with…

My wish for CHRISTmas

My wish for CHRISTmas
My wish for CHRISTmas   Now that I have reached and exceeded the age of 70 years my wishes for Christmas have changed dramatically. Instead of the usual gifts of tools, sports equipment or clothing I have finally decided I wanted something even better. Peace on Earth and goodwill toward all.   I know I’m living in a dream world hoping what I wish for at Christmas comes true.   Our world and country are driven by power, greed and narcissism over and above what we can ever imagine.   In my world, be it ever so small and simple,…

Street Strategies at Work – THE SHARK

Street Strategies at Work – THE SHARK
THE SHARK Imagine a typical scene from a nature-network documentary, one that shows a fur seal frantically swimming with a great white shark in ruthless pursuit, the huge snout of the shark filling the television screen. In the corresponding street scene, you’re riding your motorcycle down a wide arterial street when a huge sedan closes in on you, its grille filling your mirrors. Just as you change lanes to get out of this car-shark’s path, the tailgater also changes lanes behind you. What are your best strategies for avoiding (or evading) this situation? Strategy: As soon as you notice a tailgater…

SAFE ZONE Speed kills… and so does slow

SAFE ZONE Speed kills… and so does slow
As a motorcycle riding instructor, I follow the curriculum and never advocate speeding. As a street renegade rider and a realist, I realize that if you don’t speed at times, a vehicle is likely to run over your butt and your bike. In my dreams, I imagine a small town (with a name like Gooberville) where a biker can ride without feeling like he’s the last target at a gun range. But I live in South Florida, number one in road rage for the third consecutive year, where I count acceleration as one of the most important actions I can…

Edel Weiss Lite : A Three-Day Adventure in South Africa
As I climb out of my comfortable bed in the dark before dawn, the adrenaline coursing through my veins has any triple shot at Starbucks beat. Scratching around with a 20-watt side lamp, I want to make sure nothing is left out of my camera bag. As I am stepping out into the cool, morning air, daylight is tearing the black curtain behind the distant mountains revealing a mouth-watering display of color. Lights are on in the row of small cabins in front of me. I hear voices floating across the African landscape as excited as I to start this…

Womens World Pushing the Societal Envelope

Womens World Pushing the Societal Envelope
As bikers we tend to push the societal envelope every now and then. It’s not that we are out there to scare anyone; this is just who we are and it’s a love that non-bikers just don’t appreciate nor understand. As the saying goes, “If I have to explain it to you, you wouldn’t understand.” I was the odd-ball in my family. This is something I’m definitely NOT ashamed of. I got my tractor-trailer license when it was unheard of for women to venture into that avenue of employment. Then – gasp – I got my motorcycle license. Again, that…

Controlling Skids – Ride Safe Ride Smart

Controlling Skids – Ride Safe Ride Smart
Though the first time it happens it will no doubt be alarming, a skidding tire isn’t necessarily a hazardous situation, and certainly no reason for undue panic. Knowing what actions to take will help you avoid a panic response, and allow you to correct the skid with a minimum of drama. Rear-wheel skids are more common during sudden, maximum braking. In simplified terms, this is because during deceleration (due to braking force) much of the load on the rear wheel transfers to the front wheel, decreasing the amount of traction available to the rear tire, making it easier for the…

Look Ma, No Hands! – Women’s World Featured Article
A Brief History I have a pretty healthy bucket list, and have done a lot of adventurous things in my life. I am no stranger to being wild. At 14, I shaved my head to solidify my distinction from the other social scenes in high school. I went on from there to cement a lifetime of operating outside the norm, living in squats and sleeping on filthy floors among rodents. Later in life, I crisscrossed the United States in vans and tour buses for years with 12 roving gypsy vaudevillians, performing in grand theaters and busking on the side of…
