Dr. Rebecca Kuo-Ryan is Skilled on the Track and in the Operating Room “What are you doing?” This was Rebecca question to her boyfriend Robert when he bought a motorcycle. Rebecca had never been around bikes but as an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in spinal injury and as the daughter of an orthopedic surgeon, she’d seen several people who’d wiped out and ended up in the operating room. She noticed that Robert was a very careful rider and soon, knowing how much it meant to him, Rebecca gave it a try. Despite seeing results of accidents, she wasn’t afraid…

Readers Ride – Kalie’s Killer Sporty
Kalie Maden is a biker to the core. She’s a wrench, building cool scooters and the bike seen here is her personal ride. Born To Ride asked her how long she’s been riding motorcycles. “It all started when I was just 10 years old,” Kalie tells us. “Santa Claus brought me a Yamaha TTR-90. I was immediately in LOVE as soon as I hopped on and rode around the backyard. Needless to say, 17 years later, I am still just as in love, if not more, with motorcycles. With such as cool Christmas gift, we had to ask if Kalie’s…

Brown Sugaa and Medusa – Women’s World
Danni Benson started out riding on the back of her boyfriend’s bike. He tended to drink a bit and she realized that riding with him wasn’t safe. She learned to ride her own and bought a 1998 GSXR 600 sport bike. Later she traded it for a Ninja 600 sports bike and dumped the boyfriend. She let a friend ride her bike and she was taking a short ride on his when the road suddenly ended, turning to gravel. With the combination of an unfamiliar bike, gravel and trying to turn quickly she crashed! It took a year to recover…

Accident Scene Management founder, Vicki “Spitfire” Sanfelipo, was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame in August of 2020. Known as “Spitfire” by her friends, Vicki certainly lives up to that moniker. Ever since starting to ride motorcycles in the late 1980s, she’s been a bundle of energy. The single parent raised three young daughters and became a Registered Nurse at a hospital in Wausau, Wisconsin, finally settling in the surgery department. In 1987 Vicki bought her first motorcycle and then in 1995, she joined the Governor’s Motorcycle tours as the only female Road Captain and ride nurse. Shortly after,…

Riding The Tail of the Dragon – Women’s World
Sam Nabb of Wilmington, Delaware works in bookkeeping and accounting for a Flame-Tech® store that her brother manages. That’s where she met Wayne who installs fireplaces. It wasn’t long before they started dating and eventually married. One weekend while on vacation in Virginia, Sam and Wayne rented scooters to ride around the town. They had a blast! Sam (short for Sandee) had never ridden a scooter or motorcycle before, and Wayne hadn’t ridden since he was a kid. Back at home, they decided to look at scooters since they’d had so much fun. They came home from the store with…

When will it be your turn?
When will it be your turn? When will the Reaper knock on your door, put out his hand and demand his payment. One day you will stand before him for that payment. For decades I have been riding my motorcycle around the country. I’ve experienced a ton of stuff. I’ve been to a lot of events, traveled countless miles, and met incredible people. With all of this, I’ve experienced great joy but recently, I’ve also experienced horrific life-altering sorrow. Over the years I have spoken many times on a topic that I’m sure many of you are tired of hearing…

Elsa Rosenberg Elsa has been a part of the Bay Area sportbike scene since 2001. Originally from India, as a young girl Elsa rode just about anything she could get her hands on – as long as her family didn’t find out! “I started out riding bicycles, mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles. My family didn’t approve of riding motorcycles due to them worrying about me getting hurt.” Leaving India for something new to do, Elsa landed in Los Angeles. “I wanted a fresh start from India. I wanted to get out and come to the United States. I decided to get…

Born To Ride Women’s World has always been dedicated to women that have a unique and wonderful story to tell in regards to their life on two (or three) wheels! The month of May has always been “set aside” in the motorcycling world to promote women riders. To me, every day is about women riders! This year, I celebrate 40 years in the wind. I started when it wasn’t cool let alone “normal.” But I persevered and accomplished many good things in promoting women in the exciting world of motorcycling. Highrise Harley – Women’s World
By Myra McElhaney Highrise Harley After spending most of my life on the back of someone else’s bike; I got my license and bought a bike at the ripe old age of 59. When my husband died, I missed him, and I missed riding with him. One of those things I could change! Learning to ride had to be easier than finding another good husband with a bike! At first, I just wanted to learn to ride. I didn’t know if I’d ever get a bike of my own. I just couldn’t see how it would fit into my lifestyle.…

Bikes, Bluetooth and Banter – Women’s World
By Myra McElhaney As you may remember from a previous column, I’m still a new rider and I live and ride in the city. I know! Most people learn on the open road, way before taking their bike into a city with heavy traffic. Living in the city when I got my license and bought my bike made the reverse more logical. Especially when I could practice during the few times when the streets were almost empty, like early Saturday and Sunday mornings before the malls open and the church services start. I’ve practiced enough riding in my familiar surroundings…

There are so many of us that have lost people close to us. From a spouse, partner, best friend, and family, it doesn’t seem to get any easier. I had the pleasure of speaking with Myra McElhaney who many of you have read her articles in Born To Ride magazine. Amber Balcean Underdog Bloodline in NASCAR
By Florida Night Train Gamble everything for love, if you’re a true human being. If not, leave this gathering. Half-heartedness doesn’t reach into majesty. You set out to find God, but then you keep stopping for long periods at mean-spirited roadhouses. ~ Rumi I think even Rumi would agree we could substitute the word “love” here for “passion.” Yes, Amber Balcean is known as an underdog. She comes from a bloodline all too familiar to me which is the good old blue-collar breed. Amber is packed with passion for what she does in ways that command respect. She comes from…

Women’s World Riding Soul-O By Myra McElhaney
“There was always a need for speed around our house.” Debi Tolbert Duggar says. She grew up around classic cars and was on the back of a boy’s motorcycle since she was 15 years old. Through some ‘bad’ relationships she ended up loving the bike more than the boy. She loved the long rides like Route 66 and riding to Daytona. Guys seem to like seeing how many miles they can get under the tires and she wanted to savor the moments and enjoy seeing the country. At one point she got off a soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend’s bike and said she’d never…
