Born To Ride Women’s World, Dr. Rebecca Kuo-Ryan
Dr. Rebecca Kuo-Ryan is Skilled on the Track and in the Operating Room “What are you doing?” This was Rebecca question to her boyfriend Robert when he bought a motorcycle. Rebecca had never been around bikes but as an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in spinal injury and as the daughter of an orthopedic surgeon, she’d seen several people who’d wiped out and ended up in the operating room. She noticed that Robert was a very careful rider and soon, knowing how much it meant to him, Rebecca gave it a try. Despite seeing results of accidents, she wasn’t afraid…

Brown Sugaa and Medusa – Women’s World
Danni Benson started out riding on the back of her boyfriend’s bike. He tended to drink a bit and she realized that riding with him wasn’t safe. She learned to ride her own and bought a 1998 GSXR 600 sport bike. Later she traded it for a Ninja 600 sports bike and dumped the boyfriend. She let a friend ride her bike and she was taking a short ride on his when the road suddenly ended, turning to gravel. With the combination of an unfamiliar bike, gravel and trying to turn quickly she crashed! It took a year to recover…

Highrise Harley – Women’s World
By Myra McElhaney Highrise Harley After spending most of my life on the back of someone else’s bike; I got my license and bought a bike at the ripe old age of 59. When my husband died, I missed him, and I missed riding with him. One of those things I could change! Learning to ride had to be easier than finding another good husband with a bike! At first, I just wanted to learn to ride. I didn’t know if I’d ever get a bike of my own. I just couldn’t see how it would fit into my lifestyle.…

Bikes, Bluetooth and Banter – Women’s World
By Myra McElhaney As you may remember from a previous column, I’m still a new rider and I live and ride in the city. I know! Most people learn on the open road, way before taking their bike into a city with heavy traffic. Living in the city when I got my license and bought my bike made the reverse more logical. Especially when I could practice during the few times when the streets were almost empty, like early Saturday and Sunday mornings before the malls open and the church services start. I’ve practiced enough riding in my familiar surroundings…

Katy O. Ishee Road Rash ‘N Road Tales By Myra McElhaney   Katy Ishee (pronounced “Is she” like is she coming or is she going?) is known in riding circles by her nickname “Krazy” and has lots of stories where she’s lived up to that name! (Like crazy fun and audacious.) As a young married woman, riding on her neighbor’s Vespa sparked a desire to ride. After divorcing, in 1974 Katy bought a 1967 R69S BMW which she still rides. In the early days of riding, Katy was often the only woman riding her own in the motorcycle clubs she…

Woman’s World By Myra McElhaney   Recovering, Riding and Raising Funds In her High School yearbook, Danielle Bosser Dahm had lots of comments from friends about her dark suntan. Tanning became an addiction for her. Not only did she enjoy the compliments on her skin tone, but studies show that tanning raises endorphins. Although she tanned easily, Danielle began tanning daily at lunchtime. She felt like it was a form of therapy from her teens into her twenties. Danielle and her Airforce husband, Chris lived in California until he was given orders to go to Germany. In 2000, she was…

Riding My Own By Myra McElhaney When I first met my husband Phil, I was excited that he had a motorcycle. I loved riding with a neighborhood guy during high school and looked forward to being on back of a bike again. Phil had a Yamaha 650. He later upgraded to a Goldwing then eventually a Harley-Davidson Tour Glide. We loved riding in the mountains of North Georgia on weekends and occasionally we’d take a longer trip. We rode and camped with another couple on the Natchez Trace. A few years later, with the same couple, we rode from Atlanta…

Smokey Mountain Women’s Motorcycle Summit By Myra McElhaney Photo Credit Ken McCurdy Transformational! Inspiring! Life changing! Amazing! These are some of the adjectives I heard as women were preparing to leave the Women’s Motorcycle Summit – Smokey Mountain Edition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The summit, held October 6th through 8th, was hosted by the Steel Horse Sisterhood Charities (SHSC), a recognized 501c3 charitable organization. SHSC’s mission is “to provide opportunities for women to develop and refine their skills while encouraging the art of women mentoring women and serving people in the motorcycle community.” After hosting several summits in the Rocky…

Make It a Great Ride! By Myra McElhaney When June Cline was about ten years old her mama’s brother, ‘Uncle James’ picked her up, sat her on back of his bike and said, “Hold on!” Off they went! June was terrified, excited and hooked. She loved it! Unfortunately, at the end of that short ride, June’s mama was furious. “If I ever catch you on the back of a motorcycle again I’ll beat you half to death,” her mama admonished. “You can die on those things!” As a teen, June’s first boyfriend William had a bike. (A secret from Mama!)…

Riding Fearlessly By Myra McElhaney Sandy Weaver rode on her brother’s dirt bike when she was a kid. When riding at the dirt track with the boys she hit a patch of sand and dumped the bike. Her dad rescued her, and despite the fall she still thought riding was cool! At age nineteen Sandy moved to Washington, DC where she had a sports car and sometimes rode on back of a boyfriend’s bike. Have you ever thought that taking a motorcycle safety class could change your life? It did for Michelle Adams! Her boyfriend had moved and in addition to having a long-distance relationship, working and going to school, Michelle’s two beloved dogs had both been diagnosed with terminal illness. Born To Ride Women’s World Open Road Girl-Sarah Andrea, Story By: Myra McElhaney
Sarah Andrea from Strasburg, Ohio remembers riding in a car as a teen and seeing a woman on a motorcycle. “That’s so cool!” she thought. Growing up in a strict religious family she learned traditional family roles so when she married, she rode on back of her husband’s motorcycle without giving thought to riding her own. After Sarah started working for a motorcycle dealership, others encouraged her to take a safety riding class. She passed the class, got her license and bought a Honda Shadow as her first bike. She’s been riding for eleven years now and has a Harley-Davidson…

Born To Ride Women’s World Open Road Girl-Melinda Johnson, Story By: Myra McElhaney
When Melinda Johnson was in her 20’s she rode on back of her boyfriend’s bike. When that relationship ended she was a single mom with two teenagers, working a full-time job, and various part-time jobs— such as cleaning offices and selling Avon and other direct marketing products. There wasn’t much time to think about riding, but she did miss it. Later when dating a new guy, she mentioned that she’d love to ride her own motorcycle and he said, “Why not?” They bought bikes together and then she signed up for the rider course. Melinda started riding around the neighborhood…
