With most businesses the most important factor for success is location, location, location! In the event production business, especially the “motorcycle” event production business it’s the date, the date, the date! Yes the location is also very important, as are so many other factors, but if you don’t have the right date it makes achieving a successful event much more elusive. It has to be the right date to meet local needs especially in a resort town, and it has to fit cleanly onto the national motorcycle event calendar. The latter is extremely important in order to bring in as many of the biggest national vendors as possible.
The Thunder Beach Spring Rally has always been the first weekend in May. Even with the weather raining on our parade the last two years, the Spring Rally’s consistent growth has helped make it one of the biggest motorcycle events in the nation.
Enduring three date changes in the last six years has made growing the Autumn Rally with the same consistency very challenging. For many years we’ve attempted to secure the permission of our local decision makers to lock in the second weekend of October … a perfect slot on the motorcycle calendar (the week before Biketoberfest, making it a no-brainer for vendors) but it conflicted with other local events. We thought three years ago that the date would be ours but it just hasn’t worked out.
But now we have what we believe will be the perfect dates for everyone: riders, vendors, sponsors and the City of PCB! For riders the weather is great – not quite so hot in the day and slightly cool at night. For vendors it’s the weekend after Daytona and right down I-10 to the Lone Star Rally in Galveston … excellent routing to hit the last three big rallies of the year. For local sponsors it’s a late season economic boost not conflicting with any other events. Best of all, the hurricane season is nearly over!
