The 24th annual Hill Country Run (HCR) comes to Luckenbach near Fredericksburg from May 1st through 3rd. This is one of the Fredericksburg Optimists Club’s largest events, they use the money to benefit a multitude of local community programs that “Bring out the best in kids”. To register ($60) head to the Luckenbach dance hall starting on Friday at 9 AM or get a free HCR t-shirt if you register online before April 15th, same price!

The kickoff for the event starts on Thursday, April 30th at Hondo’s on Main in Fred, at 6 PM with a “meet and greet”. Hondo’s serves food, drink and live music, while event organizers hold prize drawings.

The HCR event includes that amazing, huge cowboy breakfast each morning, much of which is cooked to order! After breakfast on Friday (if you can still button your pants!) enjoy a free range ride through the area (don’t forget about Enchanted Rock SP) or head to Fred for some shopping or a tour of the National Museum of the Pacific War. All roads lead back to Luckenbach for live music from 1 PM with an evening dance. Visit “the alley”, a vendors row with all manner of biker gear or to just soak up that Luckenbach ambiance while sitting in the shade of those huge oak trees. Don’t forget your souvenir HCR t-shirt!

On Saturday, get your maps for the Hill Country Ride- four separate trips through the hills surrounding Fredericksburg and in the springtime – read bluebonnets! Be sure to get your cards for that prize giveaway, along with some great auction items. Live music starts at 1 PM and be sure to enter your bike in the bike show. Event organizer Debbie Reeh says “we’ll have some really great new games with special prizes”, so hang around awhile. Also new is the Saturday evening “Brew and BBQ”, a local pitmaster is serving up some kickin’ Q for $15 a plate, tickets must be purchased in advance.

Sunday morning the Optimists of Fred will send you on your way with many thanks and hearty, belt-busting Cowboy Breakfast. Ride safe and come back next year for the 25th Anniversary HCR!
