Recreational Trails Program Funding  Saved in Congressionally Approved Transportation Bill PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- In great news for motorcyclists, the embattled federal Recreational Trails Program that faced possible extinction exists in a massive transportation bill approved by Congress on June 29, the American Motorcyclist Association reports. The spending authorization bill, "Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century," known as Map-21, includes $85 million a year through fiscal 2014 for the trails program, which provides funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. Fifty U.S. Lawmakers Oppose Motorcycle-only Checkpoints PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Some 50 U.S. House members have signed onto a bill that would bar the U.S. transportation secretary from providing funds for motorcycle-only checkpoints, the American Motorcyclist Association reports. The measure, H.R. 904 authored by Rep. Motorcyclist fatalities for 2011 will be about the same as 2010   PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Motorcyclist fatalities for 2011 will be about the same as 2010, according to a preliminary report released on May 21 by the Governors Highway Safety Association, the American Motorcyclist Association reports. Based on preliminary data, the GHSA reports that fatalities decreased by 1.67 percent during the first nine months of 2011. However, the association projects the final tally will be very close to the 4,502 fatalities reported for 2010. Report on California base expansion impact on off-highway riding sought The U.S. House has approved legislative language that would require the Marine Corps to produce a report on how a proposed base expansion would affect off-highway riding near San Bernardino, Calif. The language is in an amendment that was offered by Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.) and included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 (H.R. 4310).
