American Brands Issue Latest Sales Reports Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycle companies both issued their 2018 earnings statements last week, and their reports were a mixed bag. Harley’s statement showed sales down 10.2 percent in 2018 and down 6.1 percent worldwide, and their 4th-quarter profit was less than half a million dollars, compared to $8.3 million a year before.   Polaris, the owner of Indian Motorcycle, also posted 4th quarter sales drops in their motorcycle division to the tune of 15 percent, mostly due to the plummeting sales of their three-wheeled Slingshot roadster. Cell Phone Restrictions Save Lives
Cell Phone Restrictions Save Lives The threat of distracted drivers has increased in recent years; so much so that nearly all states have passed various laws restricting handheld cell phone use and texting. Two Florida-based college professors, Gulcin Gumus and Michael T. French questioned if these laws made motorcyclists safer, and decided to look at government statistics from 2005 - 2015. Previous studies had not shown much of a link between overall traffic fatalities and laws restricting handheld cell phone use and texting, but the professors thought the story might be different for motorcyclists, who are more vulnerable to distracted…

New Study Shows Cell Phone Laws Save Motorcyclist’s Lives   A recent study in Florida showed states with stricter “cell phone use while driving” laws have seen reduced fatalities among motorcyclists. Gulcin Gumus of Florida Atlantic University and Michael T. French of the University of Miami looked at government stats over an 11-year period, from 2005 through 2015, to determine whether or not such laws were making a difference pertaining to riders. Roustabout – Biker Movie Review
Born To Ride is reviewing the top 13 “Biker Exploitation” Films. Elvis’ Roustabout comes in at number 11. In order to understand the true and effectual definition of the word (roustabout), I actually had to do some research. I had always assumed that a ‘Roustabout’ was just a loner that traveled around on a motorcycle, drinking and beating people up. This vision in my mind was likely based on the movie, which I viewed when I was a child. I wasn’t very far off. It seems that the true definition of a roustabout or people that are (roustabouts) are basically…

Messy Opening Round of Supercross 2019 With the beginning of a year, a new season of motorcycle racing kicked off over the weekend with the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series, at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. And what a crazy kickoff it was.     Southern California is prone to early January rains, and true to form, the sky opened up over the city and stadium, dumping hours and inches of rainfall on the track and riders. This made an already technical course a slough of muck and mire.     Opening heats and qualifiers on Friday in both the…

Mr. Bikefest
Trying to determine the exact point where Mr. Bikefest was created is tricky. Ron was always an entertainer; he created a fun and welcoming atmosphere everywhere he went. His personality combined with a passion for conquering new challenges means he was always getting into something. The defining moments leading to Mr. Bikefest started in 2001. My dad and I had just finished the 1941 flathead and decided to debut that beauty at Daytona. With no preparation and little knowledge about that famous beach town, it was by chance that I entered and won the Daddy Rat ride in bike show.…
