1971 Honda CT-70 takes AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award at The Quail Motorcycle Gathering
For owner Steve Mast, bike recalls lasting childhood memories
PICKERINGTON, OHIO — The 2018 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award, presented at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel, Calif., on May 5, went to a 1971 Honda CT-70 owned by Californian Steve Mast.
The crystal engraved award platter from Tiffany & Co. was presented to Mast by AMA Advertising Director Steve Gotoski.
“Sunny California skies helped bring out 3,000 enthusiastic motorcycle fans, along with 350 unique motorcycles on display at the 10th anniversary of The Quail Motorcycle Gathering at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club,” said Quail Lodge & Golf Club Director of Motorsports Gordon McCall. “Half a dozen AMA Hall of Famers were in attendance, as well, including the recipient of the Quail ‘Legend of the Sport,’ Arlen Ness. With an award presentation of their own, the AMA was all hands on deck at the show, continuing with a great partnership with The Quail.”
The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award recognizes a model that best represents a contribution or contributions that AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers have made to the growth of American motorcycling. The selection is made by a committee of attending Hall of Famers.
This year’s winner, popularly known as the Honda Trail 70, pays homage AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Soichiro Honda and honors the model’s status as an iconic “gateway” motorcycle, conjuring memories among countless riders of their first bike.
Mast said that he owned a blue 1971 Honda CT-70 when he was a child and tried to find his original bike before buying this award winner. He said the bike is street legal and ridden regularly.
In addition to presenting the heritage award, the AMA was on location to greet supporters, sell memberships and provide information about the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
“We are looking forward to building on our relationship with the AMA, as we start planning for our 2019 show next May 4,” McCall said.
