Team vying for spot in Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup final

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to announce that U.S. motorcycle racers will compete in Vastervik, Sweden, on July 26 with the hope of earning a spot in the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup final scheduled for July 30.

American Speedway legend and U.S. team captain Greg Hancock, who leads the point standings in the FIM Speedway GP World Championship, will compete alongside Ryan Fisher, Billy Janniro, Ricky Wells and Luke Becker.

“Speedway racing is extremely competitive on the world stage, and the American racers are ready for it,” said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. “Our team will show the international audience that America produces world-class speedway talent.”

Lance King serves as team manager this year. King came within one point of being World Champion in 1984 and rode for the U.S. in seven World Cup Finals. His speedway savvy and experience will prove invaluable to the team’s efforts.

Steve Evans once again serves as the U.S. team coordinator.

A win in Sweden qualifies the U.S. team for the final on July 30 in Manchester, England. A second or third place finish advances the team to the race-off on July 29, also in Manchester, England.

Developed in the 1920s, speedway racing remains a premier spectator sport in Europe and continues to grow in popularity in the United States. Competitors use 500cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder engines that run on methanol fuel. The ovals range between 850 feet and 1,500 feet.
