Former AMA Pro Road Racing rider Tommy Aquino was killed Sunday and a second man was injured in a crash at a motocross track in Piru, Calif.
According to the Ventura County Star, two riders made head on contact with one rider pronounced dead at the scene and the second life flighted to a local hospital.
Aquino’s death has been confirmed by his family and his website simply shows a black ribbon adorned with the No. 31.
Aquino raced in the Daytona SportBike class in 2011, winning at New Jersey Motorsports Park. He rode for GR Motorsport in the British National Superstock series last season and was scheduled to continue with the team this year.
“It is with massive regret that we confirm the extremely sad passing of our friend and rider Tommy Aquino,” read a statement on the team’s website. “Tommy was a great asset to our Team and a welcome addition to my family. Tommy was enjoying a day with his father Tom and a friend and became involved in a freak accident. The thoughts of all our Team members, sponsors and friends are with Tom, Carrie (mother) and Michael (brother) as this tragic loss is shared.”
